Raleigh, NC — The Center for Innovation Management (CIMS) at NC State University has received a competitive, $129,000 grant from the SciSIP (Science of Science and Innovation Policy) program of the National Science Foundation to study how the world’s most innovative companies create effective R&D processes, procedures and policies.
R&D intensive firms, particularly those engaged in global competition, are making decisions today to support future technological innovation, yet policy makers have very little knowledge of how those decisions are actually made. In partnership with researchers at the College of William and Mary, CIMS will capture industrial decision-makers’ processes for deciding on moves to build innovation capabilities and address their long-term strategic thinking, taking into account emerging global trends in science, technology and management practices.
The goal of the project—dubbed the “Lab of the Future” initiative--is to gather the kind of information needed to support descriptive modeling of these decisions, to enhance academic understanding and help improve policymaking.
The two-year project will focus on companies that are members of the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), a longtime CIMS supporter and collaborator. Researchers will also work with IBM and NASA’s Langley Research Center.
Based in the College of Management, CIMS offers industry-driven, research-based programs designed to help companies manage the process of innovation. For more information, call 919-513-0166.
