Information about Dr. Bean

Alden S. Bean is the Executive Director of the Center for Innovation Management Studies located at NC State University. Before the Center was moved to NC State in March of 2000 he held the Wm. R. Kenan, Jr. Chair in Management and Technology in the College of Business and Economics at Lehigh University. He was the founding Director of Lehigh's Center for Innovation Management Studies (a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center). Prior to his Lehigh appointment, Dr. Bean spent 10 years with the National Science Foundation, and served on the faculties of the University of Cincinnati, the State University of New York at Albany and Northwestern University. He is a Charter Member of the Senior Executive Service of the United States of America, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of Sigma Xi. He has served as a consultant to numerous industrial organizations and governmental agencies.

Dr. Bean's current research involves studies of patterns in the organization and funding of U.S. industrial R&D activities, the role of technology in U.S. firms' corporate strategy, and technological innovation and productivity growth in U.S. firms. He has also authored numerous articles and reports on research management, and science and technology policy.

He is a member of the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and presently serves as Department Editor for the Technology & Innovation Management section. He holds a BS degree, in Economics from Lake Forest College, an MS in Industrial Engineering and a Ph D in Organization Theory from Northwestern University.

Dr. Bean has been active in Management of Technology teaching and research for many years, having served on the MoT Task Force appointed by the National Research Council in 1986. Following the publication of the Task Force report, Management of Technology: The Hidden Competitive Advantage; Dr. Bean served on the National Technological University's Curriculum Committee and helped with the design of the Master's degree programs in Mot for both NTU and Lehigh University. Currently, Dr. bean serves as Program Director for the NTU/Mot program.
