Abstract
The project described in this report was concerned with the (a) identification of the tasks performed by individuals in managerial roles in research and development organizations, (b) the evaluation of the importance, frequency, and relative time spent on these tasks at different levels of R&D management, (c) the clustering of these tasks into generic R&D managerial performance requirements underlying performance on these tasks, and (d) the linking of these performance requirements with the cognitive abilities and social-interactional skills needed to perform these requirements effectively. In addition, the motivational job characteristics and leadership styles that characterize R&D managerial jobs at different organizational levels were assessed. The findings are discussed in terms of implications for R&D management staffing and development. Additionally, an R&D Managerial Activity Inventory and accompanying Manual were developed to enable R&D managers to assess the extent to which their current jobs require each of the performance dimensions identified.
