Abstract

Ethics in Innovation This study focused on the ethics of innovation in high technology firms. The idea for this study resulted from and in-depth qualitative analysis of Evans and Sutherland, a computer simulation firm, in 1985. In 1993 and 1994, the generalizability of these research findings were tested in another 4 business units of 2 firms in Orange County, Southern California. In 1995 through 1997, data was gathered from t2 firms in the Utah Valley technologic corridor, and I in Salt Lake City, funded, in part, by two CIMS grants. Data gathering was done on a project basis, with members of all levels of the managerial hierarchy and all functional specializations involved in the project being both interviewed and surveyed. Excluding the Evans and Sutherland data, approximately 90 project participants completed two surveys on innovation in their companies. Data was collected on 11 major, significant innovation projects in these companies. The projects involved a wide range of products, from combination computer chips, light sensors, disk drives, software, modems, to computerized manufacturing components.
