Abstract

This project report consists of two parts: Part I titled "Building competence for supplier management : Fast-cycle development in South Korea and Thailand." Is based on field research and interviews with managers in Japan, United States, South Korea and Thailand. We present an approach for building competence and illustrate its use through case studies, one each in South Korea and Thailand. Part II titled "The role of norms in supplier's innovative activities for customized products: A cross-sectional study in the automotive industry." is based on a large sample survey of automotive suppliers in the United States and Canada. This survey is a part of the doctoral dissertation submitted by Ratee Apana to the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the PhD degree in Business Administration. We propose that relational norms can be used to explain suppliers' innovative activities in manufacturer-supplier relationships. This proposition is tested by administering a survey questionnaire to 180 automotive suppliers (108 or 60% response rate). Data from the survey support our hypotheses about the linkage between relationalism and suppliers' innovative activities.
