A previous phase of this research (1) identified 244 tasks performed by R&D managers, (2) evaluated their importance and frequency and the relative time spent in these tasks by managers at different organizational levels, (3) identified three underlying performance requirements of these tasks, and (4) linked these performance requirements to be cognitive and interpersonal skills needed to perform these requirements effectively. This report describes the next phase concerned with developing and evaluating procedures to assess the required abilities identified in the earlier study. These procedures included standardized paper-and-pencil tests, assessment center exercises, video simulations, and biodata questionnaires. The measures were administered to R&D managers whose current performance and long-term performance outcomes were appraised by their supervisors, peers, and subordinates. Information on the managers' time allocation across the managerial activities identified was also obtained. The report describes the reliabilities of the measures and their relationships with the performance criteria. Implications of the findings for R&D management staffing and development are discussed.
